How Three Cigars Changed History

It was September 9, 1862, the second year of the war. The lone figures sat atop a rail fence away from the campfires that glowed throughout the Maryland fields. It was the first taste of autumn and after a day of heat, dust, and sweat, the coolness put a chill into the air, forcing the man to wear an ivercoat that bore no markings or identification. But from his gray clothing it was obvious that he was a member of the confederate army. He was exhausted from riding hard all day and he knew his ride was not over.

Looking around, the man reached inside his breast pocket, and removed a bulky envelope. He opened it and removed a piece of paper which was wrapped around three cigars. Just as he started to remove one of the cigars and stick it into his mouth, a figure stepped out of the shadows. After a brief exchange of words, the man placed the cigars back in the paper and carefully rewrapped them, perhaps more concerned about the paper than the cigars. Hurriedly, he placed the envelope back under his coat, as the two men moved off toward two saddled horses which were hitched to the rail fence. As the two mounted their horses, the man with the envelope failed to notice that his priceless cargo had fallen to the ground. As the men rode away, the man dreamed of tasting the cigar when he had finally finished with his task....
