Pipe smoking and Morocco have had a long love affair. In the early part of the 16th century, Spanish and Portugese travelers introduced tobacco to the Arabs and Berbers throughout Morocco. The Berbers, the native people who lived scattered among Morocco's mountain ranges, then took to mixing tobacco with kif, the indigenous hemp grown in the Ketama and Rif Mountains. This gave a whole new zing to the smoking experience, and this practice is still followed today.
