Weigh anchor. Slip away. Right out of life's quotidian chores and into paradise. We've all had it: that heady South Seas dream of disappearing one fine morning ... to settle in some enchanted island. Live without worries, without commitments. Call it the Gauguin impulse.



Not long ago that particular ship of mine came in... passage, the Society Islands, centered on Tahiti itself, on whose shores have always washed up all manner of seafaring hopeless dreamers and incurable romantics. Tahiti is only one of 115 islands that comprise French Polynesia - five archipelagoes spread out over I.5 million square miles in the South Pacific. Believe me: I'm sorely tempted to spin this tale with fake maps and false place names. No matter. Like me, if you're soul-starved enough, you too will find a way there...
