SUMMER SOLACE...

"A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken." - James Dent

As you leaf through the pages of this Summer issue, make sure you are in a quiet, relaxing place, with your feet up and your favorite cigar and beverage at your side ... you are not going anywhere for a while. This season is perfect for lazy summer days, and this issue is the ideal complement for your relaxing journey to solace.

To whet your appetite, begin with a few of our SMOKE Front news tidbits, as we explore two classic car milestones, a luxurious sojourn at sea, a pampering cigar and cognac bath, along with our informative how-to tip on hitting the perfect drive.

For more in-depth reading, we bring you an entertaining SMOKE Undercover, showcasing the superstitious nature of baseball players. Writer Jack Connelly takes you to the ballpark and observes some of the strange rituals that obsess your favorite players. From wearing black silk underwear on the mound to petting chickens before hitting the field, you just might be surprised to hear what some players do to prep for a game.

Summer would not be complete without a few soothing rounds of golf. On page 52, we travel to Australia to explore golf and grapes. Photojournalist Andrew Marshall samples the fine golf courses in the Mornington Peninsula area and pays a visit to the enthusiastic wine growers in the region.

If you are seeking adventure, flip to our cover story featuring the enigmatic William Petersen, star of the hit TV show CSI. Crime scene science is the wave of the future in TV police dramas, and the success of CSI has catapulted this actor to the realm of celebrity status. Get the scoop from William himself, and see how this talented actor makes being a criminalist sexy, on page 58.

In closing, I would like to take a moment to remember the legendary Milton Berle, an entertainment icon who sadly passed away in late March. In the ensuing months, we have received countless letters from readers and devoted fans of Mr. Berle who were deeply saddened by the loss of this cigar-smoking funnyman who touched the lives of so many. We would like to dedicate this issue to the comedic genius who was always adorned with a cigar and a smile. Thanks for the happy memories, Uncle Miltie. You were truly one of a kind.
