SMOKE Cities: Smokin' in Vegas
(continued)

Back at MGM Grand you’ll find Tabú, a “cocktail experience” that welcomes cigar smokers amidst an environment of changing lights and music played low enough to encourage conversation. Or you can just sit on the padded bar and order a frozen vodka from the ice room, or fire a stogie up as you lounge on the super-comfortable cushioned couches and watch evolving images on the “reactive tables.” The VIP area even has a separate bar and restroom. Tabú and the nearby fusion-drink bar Zuri are the latest in a number of planned cigar-friendly cocktail and restaurant environments envisioned by Gamal Aziz, MGM Grand president and chief operating officer, another non-smoker who nonetheless knows that hand-rolled cigars can lure high-roller clientele.

Owner Andrew Patz selects a cigar from his huge inventory at the Las Vegas Tinder Box, about 12 miles south of the famous Strip.
With so many cigar-smoking venues, Las Vegas has an equally diverse selection of tobacconists, including the fellow who advertises “Real Cuban Cigars,” that are actually made of non-Cuban tobacco rolled by Cubans.

However, you can get authentic pre-embargo H. Upmann and Romeo y Julieta Cuban cigars at the two Davidoff stores in the Venetian. They’ll set you back $400 a stick, so you might want to try their Zino Platinum Crown Series instead. You’ll find an equally great assortment of premium cigars in all the Davidoff shops, including those at the MGM Grand and in the new Mandalay Place shopping center that connects with the Luxor.

But for one of the largest displays of high-grade pipes and cigars in Las Vegas, a “must” visit is The Tinder Box on West Sahara Boulevard, about 12 miles south of the Strip, near the scenic Red Rock area. Here you will find a vast assortment of hard-to-find cigars, including Graycliff, Fuente Fuente OpusX, and Padron 1964 Anniversary Series. Also on display is a wide selection of Dunhill pipes, as well as other high-grade briars, including Ascorti and Peterson. Accessories from ST Dupont, Dunhill, and Colibri, plus a full range of Tinder Box hand-blended tobaccos, make this a smoker’s lucky charm.

Tabú, at the MGM Grand, is a constantly changing evolution of light, sound, and cigar smoke.
And while another Las Vegas icon, Elvis Presley, holds the title of “The King of Rock and Roll,” the undisputed kings of Las Vegas cigars have to be Michael and Robert Frey - known collectively as Frey Boys Tobaccos. Their well-appointed shops are located at the Coliseum Stores in Caesar’s Palace; Mardi Gras Cigars at the Rio; Empire Cigars at New York, New York; Medici Cigars at Monte Carlo; the Partagas Cigar Factory at Smith & Wollensky’s Steak house on the strip; and at Cigar Box.com on Rancho Drive, just west of the strip. And here’s a tip: you’ll be able to find pre-embargo Cuban cigars - including Ramón Allones from the 1940’s and the rare Quo Vadis from 1926 - at their Caesar’s store.

Whatever your results at the gaming tables, rest assured that there are numerous venues that welcome your lit cigar, whether it’s celebrating victory or lamenting the capricious whims of Lady Luck. Indeed, as far as pipe and cigar smokers are concerned, Las Vegas is the winningest city in America.
