Cold
Comforts
Cigar lovers have many nicknames for their beloved smokes. Reading through the reviews that come in from our panelists across the country, we’re pretty sure we’ve seen them all: Sticks. ‘Gars. Puros. Stogies. Bullets. Torps. And the one most appropriate for this time of year: Heaters.
There is something about puffing on a cigar on a chilly, blustery winter night that fills us with a sense of cozy warmth that’s almost akin to sitting in the crackling glow of a fireplace (of course, the combination of cigar and fireplace is one of those truly perfect marriages, enhanced by a glass of brandy and a leather chair and - but we digress). Maybe it’s the primal experience of starting a fire in the midst of the cold, as our ancestors did to provide comfort and protection. Maybe it’s the fact that a cigar is a little piece of the tropics itself, its ingredients grown, harvested, fermented, and aged in balmy, humid climates, and maintained in a box that replicates those perfect conditions. Whatever the reason, smoking a cigar in the cold months carries with it a sense of satisfaction that’s hard to replicate any other time of year - especially if the cigar is of outstanding quality and flavor.

As always, we’ve done our best to find some of those great cigars for you and put them to the usual rigorous tests of our nationwide panel of tasters. The front-runner of this issue’s Review was something of a surprise: the Exquisitos Belicoso Long from Crown David International, a dos capa (double wrapper) cigar that our panelists awarded a rare 4.6. Perhaps the novelty “barber pole striped” cigar is poised for a comeback. Also impressing the panelists were the Cuban H. Upmann No. 2 and the Lempira Churchill, a Nicaraguan puro from Tabacalera Tropical, both earning a 4.5. A variety of cigars from prolific producers like Perdomo, Toraño, CAO, Matasa, and General Cigar also received Excellent scores, including much-anticipated releases like the Joya de Nicaragua Celebracion Churchill (4.4) and the Excalibur Royal Sterling Fidelis (4.3), both of which lived up to the hype, according to our experts.
Congratulations to the latest additions to our growing legions of cigar reviewers, including new Smoke Online “Become a Reviewer” contest winners, William Payne and Mark Phelps. Head over to www.smokemag.com if you’d like to take part. And may the holiday season bring good cheer, good smokes, and good friends.

The mellow finish went well with vanilla ice cream. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | As an experienced smoker, I didn't find much in this one that struck me as special. Good for beginners. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | Certainly a "full stomach" evening smoke. Grab a heavy porter and unwind with this bad boy! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |
 | | CUSANO COROJO 1997 Robusto | Country: DR | Manufacturer: Cusano Cigars | Size: 5 x 50 | Filler: DR | Binder: Mex | Wrapper: Ecu | | Panelist #1 | Incredible consistency in all samples. My libation of choice was a rich vintage Port, after a spicy BBQ meal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #2 | The perfect size for a lunchtime smoke, this cigar also makes a good match with a lager on the patio. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | If you don't mind a little acidity in your cigar, this might be for you. I just couldn't get too excited. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | Quite an enjoyable cigar, and one you would offer to a friend you'd like to impress. Seems very well-aged. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |
 | | BOHEMIAN BAMBOO North Beach | Country: DR | Manufacturer: Victor Sinclair | Size: 5 x 52 | Filler: Br/DR/Nic | Binder: Ecu | Wrapper: Ecu | | Panelist #1 | Smoked this after a chicken Caesar and cool draft. I'm not a fan of mild smokes, but this one relaxed me. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #2 | A cigar mellow enough to smoke first thing in the morning; I'd give it to my casual-smoker fishing buddies. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | This one grips your palate like a gorilla does a piece of Samsonite luggage. Not for the weak-hearted. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | I was right; this one was a piece of candy. If you like cigars mild and sweet, yet flavorful, this is for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |

This will impress your smoking friends when they visit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #2 | Looks like a barber pole but tastes like a dream. This cigar is a great addition to anyone's humidor. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | Espresso pairs nicely with this "any time of day" cigar. Its uniqueness is welcome and I enjoyed the flavor. | | DIABLO Caliente | Country: DR | Manufacturer: General Cigar Co. | Size: 5 x 50 | Filler: DR/Nic | Binder: Conn | Wrapper: Ecu | | Panelist #1 | A definite meat-and-potatoes cigar. Enjoy it in the evening with a bold Cabernet or a brawny tawny port. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #2 | Bold flavors here, but not too overpowering. This cigar would go great after a salmon dinner. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | The flaking ash was a negative, but this is an all-occasion smoke that I could handle on an empty stomach. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | Don't oversmoke it, and you can't go wrong with this one. It's perfect for just about any outdoor activities. RECOMMENDED |

 | | SAVINELLI FUERTE Churchill | Country: Nic | Manufacturer: Savinelli, LTD | Size: 6 7/8 x 48 | Filler: Nic | Binder: Nic | Wrapper: Nic | | Panelist #1 | A strong cigar with a nice lingering aroma. It's best with a single malt Scotch or a good Cuban rum. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #2 | This baby held together nicely, despite my frequent chewing on it. A very nice smoke, indeed. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | Decent, but I worked too hard for the flavor. Give it a try, but you're better off letting it age for a while. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | I found this to be a decent after-dinner smoke, best enjoyed with your favorite full-bodied red wine. RECOMMENDED |

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | Great potential here, but need some time to even out. I'd rest a few of these for six months and try again. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | Nothing subtle about this one; it's all in-your-face elegance. An eye-opener with charisma and class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |

It's best after lunch with a winter brew. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #2 | A lot of work required for such a petite stick; other than the nice shape, not much to rave about. MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | Ignore the opening harsh puffs, and enjoy the rest of this cigar for what it is: a top-notch short smoke. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | You'll want to smoke this peppery little powerhouse with a cold drink, like a single malt on the rocks. RECOMMENDED |

RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #3 | A consistent, easy-to-smoke cigar that doesn't compete with what you're drinking. Great with coffee. RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | A wonderful Sunday brunch cigar. A newspaper, coffee and Sambuca make smoking this one an event. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |

MILDLY RECOMMENDED | | Panelist #4 | I expected more from this big torpedo. It smokes nicely for the first two-thirds, then finishes hot. MILDLY RECOMMENDED |
