Name:
GRAND HAVANA ROOM
The Grand Havana Room offers comfy chairs in which to smoke your selection of one of the 50+ brands in their humidors. If you're one of the chosen few who've paid the $2,000 initiation fee (+ $1 50/month dues), you can go downstairs and smoke in the posh environment of this outpost of the Grand Havana Rooms, also open in LA and NY.
Name:
TOBACCO BARN AT PENTAGON CITY
For a mall store, they really do it right here. Since they're located above a Metro stop, five minutes from downtown D.C., don't be afraid to venture across the river and see the full assortment of Davidoff, Paul Garmirian, Montecristo, Butera, Ashton Cabinet, and many other cigars. There is also a good selection of top-shelf pipes and humidors from Avo and Davidoff. Marlin Fitzwater is often spotted buying his smokes here. A favorite of Pentagon top brass, Tobacco Barn has five other stores in the more distant northern Virginia suburbs.
Name:
SIGNATURE CIGARS
Special Features: A full service store about 20 minutes from downtown D.C. in suburban Rockville, this shop has 80+ brands of cigars, a full line of accessories, and a smattering of pipes. The shop specializes in humidors, and stocks over 50 different types at any time. Signature is known for obtaining difficult-to-find cigars, so if you can't find what you want downtown, it might be worth the trip. There is a smoking lounge, with leather sofas and chairs in which to smoke your purchase, a pool table for those who want to shoot a rack, and personal storage lockers available for as little as $300 per year. Known for friendly and knowledgeable service, Signature will be opening a store in downtown Washington in, early 1998.
Name:
WIDE WORLD OF WINES AND CIGARS
An upscale store carrying rare and fine wines and spirits going back to 1824. A staggering wine list includes 240 chardonnays from California alone, 100 different burgundies ... you get the picture. WWWC carries about 40 lines of cigars, including La Gloria Cubana, Arturo Fuente, Ashton, Astral, Avo, Cohiba, Dunhill, H. Upmann, Hamilton's, and Hoyo de Monterrey. I was amazed to find all the good sizes of La Glorias in stock during many trips to this store over the course of the summer.
